Yes, the words. ChatGPT reads an uploaded PDF and writes the translation into the chat. What it doesn't do is give you the same document back: tables turn into lines of text, and the logos, stamps and layout are lost. Numbers come back as text the model wrote, so check each one against the original.
Free accounts also have upload limits. In our test in November 2026, ChatGPT's free plan stopped with "Get Plus for more uploads or wait 7 hours".

Can ChatGPT keep the formatting of a PDF?
Not as the same file. ChatGPT gives you the translated text in the chat, and you rebuild the layout yourself. Samedoc returns the document itself in the original layout.
Can ChatGPT translate a scanned PDF?
It can read the text in a scan or a photo, but you still get text back, not the page. Samedoc gives you back the scanned page with the translation in place.
